The aftermath of Marc Márquez’s departure from Honda has been rife with speculation about his potential replacement. One name that has frequently surfaced in these discussions is Johann Zarco, who has already signed with LCR, Honda’s satellite team, for the 2024 season.

Zarco, when previously questioned about the possibility of moving to Honda, mentioned: ‘It’s a tripartite contract; Honda can decide where to place me’.

However, Lucio Cecchinello, the man behind LCR, is not thrilled about the idea of Zarco filling the vacant spot at Honda. He stated: ‘I expect respect… if Zarco is taken from me, I lose the sponsors who support me. I’ve promised them a rider capable of delivering results. Without sponsors, I don’t have the funds to provide bikes to Honda. I don’t even want to entertain that possibility’, as quoted by L’Équipe.

The rumor mill has been working overtime, suggesting that Honda might be eyeing one of Aprilia’s riders, either Maverick Viñales or Miguel Oliveira, as they seem keen on having an experienced rider. However, Massimo Rivola, Aprilia’s team principal, appears adamant about not letting either of his riders go.

The question remains: given the current stage of his career, would Zarco turn down an offer from a factory team? Guillaume Valladeau, Zarco’s manager, commented, ‘I understand Lucio Cecchinello’s stance, but Marc’s departure opens a door, and Johann is a talented rider. If the opportunity arises, he shouldn’t decline it’.

Inside the LCR team, efforts will be made to retain Zarco for 2024. Beyond the significant issue of sponsorships, the LCR Honda team head emphasized that with them, Zarco would have dedicated technicians ready to provide him with the best bike possible.

As it stands, Zarco, currently with Prima Pramac Racing, might not have much say in the internal decisions of the team regarding whether he’ll be promoted to the official bike or not. However, it seems Honda will keep its cards close to its chest until the end of the current season, leaving fans and pundits in suspense about who will step into Márquez’s shoes.
