Aleix Espargaro had a dream sunday in Barcelona as he secured the double on catalan soil, in a race that was marked by initial chaos involving five riders, and by an incident later on that could have serious consequences for Pecco Bagnaia.

A good start by Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) from pole position to maintain his lead. In the first corner, five riders crashed and, shortly afterwards, Bagnaia himself crashed and was hit by Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) with a leg injury.

Maverick Viñales (Aprilia) and Miguel Oliveira (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP Team/Aprilia) had been second and third before all the chaos. The five-rider incident was triggered by a crash from Enea Bastianini (Ducati), who caught Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac/Ducati). Also caught were Alex Marquez, Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini/Ducati) and Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team/Ducati). The whole situation led to a red flag, not least because Bagnaia had to be assisted at the scene of the crash.

Information then emerged that Pecco Bagnaia had been taken to the circuit’s medical center, and although it’s not official yet, the first rumors point to a possible fracture in one of Bagnaia’s legs. Please note that this information is not official.

At the restart of the race, it was worth noting the absence of the two official Ducati riders, Bagnaia and Bastianini, both in the medical center.

Martin briefly moved into the lead before Viñales overtook him. Pol Espargaro, meanwhile, abandoned due to technical problems with his RC16.

On the third lap, the highlight was A. Espargaro overtook Martín to take second place. Oliveira was fourth and Zarco fifth.

The gap between Oliveira and Martín was 0.160s, and it was expected that the portuguese would overtake the #89, something that happened soon after, moments before Brad Binder abandoned the race.

With five laps gone, Viñales was leading by 0.303s over A. Espargaró. Olivieira was 0.764s off the front of the race.

The next few laps saw little change in terms of race leadership, but Oliveira lost third place after a (slow) response from Martín, who returned to the podium at the expense of the portuguese rider.

With the race more than halfway over – nine laps to go – A. Espargaró was 0.748s ahead of Viñales, who remained the leader. Martin was third at 4.207s. Oliveira and Zarco were fourth and fifth respectively.

Meanwhile, news emerged about Bagnaia and Bastianini: both will be forced to go to hospital for further tests to assess their condition.

With six laps to go, Viñales was leading by 0.299s over his teammate, who was gaining time lap after lap, signaling a real battle of the titans… between the Aprilia Racing duo.

One more lap and Espargaro gained a tenth on Viñales. Martín seemed to be out of the race for victory for the time being, such was the gap to the front duo.

The overtake came shortly afterwards, with Viñales coming out too wide and Espargaró not forgiving. In no time at all, the #41 had gained more than 1s on his teammate.

Note to Oliveira, who was fifth at this stage after Zarco overtook him, leaving the Prima Pramac Racing duo together in third and fourth.

There were no more significant changes until the end and Aleix Espargaro secured the home double, with Aprilia smiling with a 1-2. Martin secured the final place on the podium.
